UW-Madison Police Chief Kristen Roman bans use of 'thin blue line' flag

Dear Chief Roman,

I’d like to register my objection to your ban of the of the use of the thin blue line flag by your officers. I am disappointed that you caved in under pressure from a small number of vocal activists. Being loud does not give them the right to speak for the UW community, of which I have been a part for over 30 years. I am further disappointed that your officers are not allowed to express pride in their profession, which, I’m sure you’ve noticed, is under increasing assault. Don’t they get to be proud of their role in protecting us?

My daughters, who are Black, painted this flag on the back of our van this summer. They did this on their own initiative. They are not amused that you consider them white supremacists.
