Looking forward

I am hopeful that we will now see emerge some much better Republican candidates for next time, some who can champion the ideals of liberal democracy with grace and compassion. It’s important to remember that the Republicans did not choose Trump; he won the nomination on vast popular support, much of it from people who had always voted Democrat before, against the opposition of most of the Republican party. I believe only one senator supported him in the 2016 primaries. Once you have an incumbent president in your party, it’s very hard to dump him for another candidate. Has that ever happened?
